In English schools, before it was made illegal, corporal punishment tended to be with the sole of a slipper or the cane. In Scotland the tawse was used instead.

A tawse is a leather strap, usually split at the end into two tails which can be used for beating a slave. Mistress can use a leather belt instead often doubled with the buckle end held in her hand and the loop of leather striking the slave. Most tawses are made of leather of the same type of leather as the belt but it is possible to get ones made of heavy rubber, occasionally split to give three tails not two.
The blow delivered by a tawse sounds loud and stings, especially the where the tails hit. Given with full force it is very powerful and can bruise or cut the skin.
