Slaves may be required to keep silent for their Mistress. If She is doing things that may make them make a noise She may want them silenced with a gag, or She may want to listen to their screams and cries as she torments them. It is Her decision.
Gags stop a slave using their mouth to talk. They can be made simply by using wide rolls of sticky tape wound round and round the head, allowing the slave to breathe through their nose but nothing from the mouth. There is often a strap around the head or a head harness with a ball or cylinder to force between the teeth and keep the mouth open. One problem with this sort of gag is that it fills up the front of the mouth, and if this happens or if the slave vomits then the vomit cannot get out and there is a risk of it going down into the lungs with dire results.

Sometimes gags incorporate a part which sticks into the mouth, like a dildo or plug to go right to the back of the mouth. This fills up the whole mouth and can cause the slave to want to be sick as it touches the back of the throat.

Often in BDSM fiction a slave is gagged by having their mouth filled with panties pushed inside and then taped in place. This also fills the mouth and can lead to the slave wanting to be sick. Some slaves can handle this sort of gagging but others cannot take it.
One option is to use a rubber butterfly gag with a latex bladder inside the front of the mouth which can be inflated to fill up and become larger filling the front part of the mouth and with a hard rubber pad on the outside of the mouth to keep the bag inside. i find this a good way to be gagged as Mistress allows me to control the amount of air in the gag. If the pain from the whipping or caning is getting severe i inflate the gag to the maximum to stop me making any noise, and if I begin to feel that i might be sick i deflate the bag so it sits just behind the teeth. This is very good of Mistress who could of course just blow up the gag and leave me tied down helpless and at Her mercy unable to speak or make a noise.
One form of gag which is good for those who find gags make them feel sick is a ring gag where a rubber or steel ring is placed in the mouth, and the mouth is held open. The slave then has an open mouth which he cannot close, and other things can then be put in there including plugs, cigarette ash or anything else the Mistress decides including a strap on dildo.
Dentists and Surgeons use a medical gag which fits around the teeth and which is used to hold the mouth open for surgical procedures where the mouth must remain open. The Whitehead gag is one variety of this sort of gag and can also be purchased from BDSM suppliers and it is good for use on slaves.

If a Mistress truly wants to stop up the mouth of a slave, and the slave is prepared for the risks of only being able to breathe through his nose and the risk of not being able to open his mouth at all then superglue can be applied to the lips to seal the mouth. A slave whose mouth has been closed with superglue is mute and can make no sound at all. Mistress needs to keep the superglue remover solution ready available in case there are problems and She needs to dissolve the glue rapidly. One problem of this sort of “muting “ of a slave is that when the glue is removed it can remove some of the skin of the lips as well and leave ulcerated lips which take time to heal and look like severe cold sores. Wax can also be tried but it is not as effective.
My experience with gags is that i find difficulty with anything inside my mouth which reaches towards the palate and the back of the mouth. Touching those areas makes me want to heave and be sick and has made dental treatment difficult in the past. i can cope with a ball gag which is part split to go part in front of my teeth and part behind, a surgical gag, or the inflatable latex butterfly gag which i have described above. Mistress has made me mute on a couple of occasions in the past with superglue. Both occasions lead to the production of small sores on the lips but that could be because i tried to open my mouth before all the glue had dissolved. On the first occasion i was kept muted for several hours including a long drive with me sitting in the front of the car. This was very successful. On a second occasion i had been given tasks to perform and exercising muted it was difficult to breathe as my nose became partially blocked
These experiences plus all that is written on the subject of gagging a slave makes me agree entirely with the idea that no slave should be left on his own after being gagged.
Mistress needs to stay with the slave who is gagged so that if there is any distress, vomiting or choking She can remove the gag immediately. But most times a Mistress wants to gag he slave it is so She can do things to him and She will be there with him all the time.
Gagging a slave allows the Mistress yet another area of his life where She is in total control. It silences noisy slaves who talk too much and prevents neighbours and those outside hearing the moans of a slave who is being tormented by his Mistress. It is also very humiliating for a slave to be there gagged, drooling with saliva running out of his mouth and with no way to shut his mouth at all.
Of course if a slave has a tongue piercing a simple gag is a cord from the tongue out of the mouth to stop him moving his tongue. Similarly a nipple clamp attached to the tongue is both painful and makes it very difficult for a slave to talk at all.
